曾子之妻之市，其子随之而泣。其母曰：“女还，顾反为女杀彘。”妻适市来，曾子欲捕彘杀之。妻止之曰：“特与婴儿戏耳。”曾子曰：“婴儿非与戏也。婴儿非有知也，待父母而学者也，听父母之教。今子欺之，是教子欺也。母欺子，子而不信其母，非所以成教也。”遂烹彘也。

译文
曾子的妻子要到集市去，她的儿子边跟着她边哭，他的母亲（曾子的妻子）说：“你回去，等我回家后为你杀一头猪。”妻子到集市后回来了，曾子就要抓住一头猪把它杀了，妻子制止他说：“刚才只不过是与小孩子闹着玩儿罢了。”曾子说：“小孩子是不能和他闹着玩儿的。小孩子是不懂事的，是要靠父母而逐步学习的，并听从父母的教诲。如今你欺骗他，是教他学会欺骗。母亲欺骗儿子，做儿子的就不会相信自己的母亲，这不是把孩子教育好该用的办法。”于是就杀了猪把它煮了。
注释
曾子（前505～前432）:曾参，春秋末年，鲁国人.孔子的弟子，字子舆，被尊称为曾子。性情沉静，举止稳重，为人谨慎，待人谦恭，以孝著称。曾提出"慎终追远，民德归厚"的主张和"吾日三省吾身"的修养方法。据传以修身为主要内容的《大学》是他的作品。
彘（zhì）：猪.
适：到……去
特：只.
非与戏：不可同……开玩笑.
子：你，对对方的尊称.
而：则，就.
非所以成教也：这样做就不能把孩子教育好
烹（pēng）：杀.
女：通“汝”，你，你们。
反：通“返”，返回。

韩非子生于周赧王三十五年（约公元前281年），卒于秦王政十四年（公元前233年），韩非为韩国公子（即国君之子），汉族，战国末期韩国人(今河南省新郑）。师从荀子，是中国古代著名的哲学家、思想家，政论家和散文家，法家思想的集大成者，后世称“韩子”或“韩非子”，中国古代著名法家思想的代表人物。
