出处春秋时，宁戚很穷，想见齐桓公而出仕，一天，乘桓公出城迎客的机会，在车下喂牛，“扣牛角疾歌”。桓公闻而赞其为“非常人”，命后车载之，拜为上卿。见《吕氏春秋·举难》、《晏子春秋·问下二》。汉·刘向《说苑·尊贤》亦载此事。
