晋朝时期，年轻有为的刘琨胸怀大志，想为国家出力，好友祖逖被选拔为官。他发誓要像祖逖那样为国分忧。后来他当官从司隶一直做到尚书郎。他曾经对亲友写信说：“吾枕戈待旦，志枭逆虏，常恐祖生先吾著鞭。”
