东晋时期，范阳孝子范逵去陶侃家投宿，陶侃家里清贫，与母亲湛氏相依为命，艰难度日。陶侃发愁了，湛氏把自己的长发剪下，让儿子拿到市场上卖了换回几斛米，另外劈柱与烧草垫招待客人，锉碎褥草给客人喂马。范逵对他们十分敬佩。
