汉朝时期，汉阳太守庞参听说本地隐士任棠有才能，想请他出山辅佐。庞参到任棠的门前等候并说明来意，任棠不说话，拿出一筐薤菜及一盆水放到门前，自己抱着孙子埋伏在旁边。庞参的手下以为他在傲慢待客，庞参立刻明白了他的意思。
