基本解释战国时，豫让受知于智伯。后，韩、赵、魏三家合力攻杀智伯。豫让为报知遇之恩，矢志复仇。于是漆身为厉，吞炭为哑，改变声音形貌，伺机刺杀赵襄子，事败而死。事见《战国策·赵策一》、《史记·刺客列传》。后以为忍辱含垢，矢志复仇的典实。

吞炭漆身的典故

春秋末期，晋国内乱，大夫赵襄子杀了大夫智伯。智伯的心腹家将豫让发誓要杀赵襄子，他潜入赵襄子的宅内行刺未遂。赵襄子佩服他的义气把他放了。第二次他把全身漆成癞子，然后吞下烧红的炭使声音变哑，再次去行刺未遂而自杀。
