基本解释《渊鉴类函·乐·鼓二》引明陈耀文《天中记》：“宋范仲淹一日携子纯仁访民家。民舍有鼓为妖。坐未几，鼓自风滚至庭不已，民舍皆股栗。仲淹徐谓纯仁曰：‘此鼓久不击，见好客至，故自来庭以寻槌耳。’令纯仁削槌以副之，其鼓立碎。”因以“悬鼓待椎”喻急不可待。

宋朝时期，范仲淹一天带儿子去民家访问，民房中有鼓妖在他们坐不久时自动滚到前庭，满屋子人都感到害怕。范仲淹慢慢地对纯仁说：“此鼓久不击，见好客至，故自来庭以寻槌耳。”就让纯仁击鼓，那妖鼓立即自破。
