神话传说，上古时期炎帝最疼爱的小女儿女娃在东海游泳被水淹死，她的灵魂于是化成一只作精卫鸟，经常飞到西山去叼小石头和小树枝扔进东海，发誓要填平东海为自己报仇，她就这样一直飞来飞去，但最终也没有将东海填平。
