战国时期，秦王嬴政因恨吕不韦专权，设法排挤他，吕不韦畏罪自杀。嬴政将吕不韦的门客全部驱散。吕不韦的门客李斯上书嬴政：“是以泰山不让土壤，故能成其大；河海不择细流，故能就其深；王者不却众庶，故能明其德。”嬴政遂留用他。
