春秋战国时期，孔子为了鼓吹他的治国之道，经常到处游说。墨翟反对恃强欺弱的战争，呼吁平等互爱，经常奔走各个诸侯国，到处宣传他的“非战”主张。他四处奔走，从来没有一个固定长住的住处。汉朝班固评价他们为：“孔席不暖，墨突不黔。”
