春秋时期，孔子带领弟子们周游列国，先后在卫、陈、蔡等国碰壁后，突然受到了楚国的邀请，孔子立即带领弟子启程赴楚，陈国立即串通蔡国放出囚犯围堵孔子。在孔子师徒被围困中，子路抱怨穷困潦倒，孔子说：“君子固穷，小人穷斯滥矣。”
