东汉光武帝刘秀重用外戚梁冀一家，梁家横行无忌，毒死汉质帝刘瓒。汉桓帝刘志当皇帝后，利用身边的五个宦官除掉了无恶不作的梁家，将这五个宦官封侯，大将军窦武写信给汉桓帝不要重蹈覆辙，结果被宦官杀害。
