孟子（即孟轲，战国中期儒家的代表人物）有一次对齐宣王说：“有一个人，因为要到楚国去，把老婆孩子交托给他的朋友，请予照顾。等到他回来的时候，才知道他的老婆孩子一直在受冻挨饿，那位朋友根本没有尽到照顾的责任。你说这该怎么办？”

齐宣王答道：“和他绝交！”孟子又说：“有一个执行法纪、掌管刑罚的长官，却连他自己的部下都管不了。你说这该怎么办？”齐宣王说：“撤他的职！”最后，孟子说：“全国之内，政事败乱，人民不能安居乐业。你说这又该怎么办？”王顾左右而言他——齐宣王望着两旁站立的随从，把话故意扯到别处去了。
