基本解释鳌：传说中的大海龟、海鳖。旧时皇宫的殿门前台阶中间刻有飞龙及巨鳌的浮雕；皇帝在殿前召见新考中的状元、榜眼等人。状元跪在前面；正好是飞龙巨鳌浮雕的头部。原指科举考试中了状元。现泛指占首位或第一名。

宋朝时期，包公奏请宋仁宗加试恩科，湖广武昌府江夏县南安善村的范仲禹得知消息后暗自叹息，同乡得知他的才华，一定会独占鳌头、金榜题名的。刘洪义资助他100两白银与一头黑驴上京。范仲禹果然不出众望得中状元。
