春秋时期，鲁国政权被季孙氏、孟孙氏和叔孙氏三家控制，鲁定公成为一个傀儡，他听说孔子开坛讲学，主张“君臣纲常”，连夜召见孔子。孔子见是临危授命，就分析了鲁国的内忧外患，建议他外联齐国，内部重振君威，制定了一系列措施。
