春秋时期，晋灵公为了享乐，要建一座九层高的楼台，造了三年还没有造好，弄得民不聊生，晋灵公还不准大臣劝谏。荀息想了一计，在晋灵公面前先用12个棋子垒在一起，然后在上面垒九个鸡蛋，最后鸡蛋倒下砸碎。晋灵公明白后下令停工。
